A Wintery Blog

What is UP?
Welllll…
It is January, and we’re just back to school (ugh). My main news is that I was in the Alps just after Christmas for a week, so I feel like talking about that. I seem to only post anytime I’ve been abroad, which is kinda silly because I’m not abroad that often. But maybe that’s the reason why it works, because I rarely have the energy to blog so whenever I get it together it just happens to be every six months or so, which has ended up coinciding with my travels!

So, the Alps! It was a very quick decision to go. See, I have a Parisien aunt-in-law who has a family chalet in a little town in the Alps called Les Contamines and she has been telling me to come with her for years and years, but I never took her up on her offer. But about three weeks before Christmas I thought that it would be a great idea to go and stay there to try out a bit of skiing and to practice my French. So I quickly okayed it with her and booked flights for the day after St. Stephen’s day. On arrival I was TOTALLY breathless with amazement. Imagine a set for The Sound of Music painted by Michelangelo, with pointy snowy mountains and clear blue skies. That was the view everywhere I looked. It felt like someone had rolled down a canvas all around the ski resort for my entertainment. (Remind you of anyone, Grace?)

I have started to listen to Carla Bruni a lot! (This happened in my preparation for France, to get into the moooooood..!) But I love love lovvvee her now. Or some songs. And I just found out she doesn’t write them which is a bit of a let down. Oh well, she has a pretty voice…

Let me leave you with a song and pictures to enjoy (:

Right now. I am in the universe. I am on the earth, too. I am in Europe, I am in Spain, and I am in Basque country. I am in Bilbao. I am in a fourth-floor apartment. I am in the living room, on the couch. I am watching a music channel on the television. It’s dance hour. I am… not exactly enjoying it. This song is good, though:

HIT ME ON MY BEEPER, BEEPER, BEEPER, BEEPER.

LADADA YOU’RE OUTTA LINE,

COS YOU PAGE ME ALL THE TIME!

It’s super 90’s. I mean, pagers, come onnnnnn! Tomorrow I go home. So I’m writing

This NOW, while I’m still here. Makes sense, eh? A while ago I went for a jaunt to get some 70% chocolate ice cream. There’s a festival on all week, and the streets are teeming with people, So, I battled my way through hoards of people to finally reach my destination: the front of the queue in the best-stocked ice cream shop I have ever seen. LITERALLY about ninety different flavours. Lots I wouldn’t touch, however. Gorgonzola ice cream, anyone? Tuna and olives? FOIE GRAS???

RUSSELL BRAND IS ON THE TONIGHT SHOW RIGHT NOW!

Yes, so I stuck to my chocolate FLAVA. And a dollop of pistachio ice cream on top, which melted instantly in the 25 degree heat of the night. Walking home I had green melty goo dripping down the cone, my hand, my arm, and onto my beige Zara cotton cardigan with blocky stripes of muted green, red and blue; my dark blue skinny jeans, and the navy moccasins I bought earlier today. My annoyedness subsided when I got to the chocolate underneath though. MMMHHMMM.

I’m babysitting my brother and sister right now. When lil’ bruvva was just about asleep, BANG! The sound of gunshots filled the air. LOUD gunshots. Like from a rifle maybe? I know nothing about guns, but it doesn’t really make much difference. All you need to know is that it was loud, and echoed against all across the city. Bruvva gripped my hand and looked at me questioningly. “Fireworks”, I told him. So, since he was awake, we sat at the window and looked out at the sky explode into every colour of the rainbow. By the end he was asleep.

Then… I turned on the laptop and the tv. And that brings us (back to doh-doh-doh-doh, Doh, a deer, a female..) up til NOW!!

Funny things that happened during my sejour:

· I saw a little girl eating a chocolate sandwich. No, not nutella. ACTUAL chocolate! Imagine getting a bar of whatever… dairy milk? And putting it into a bit of baguette. Sounds strangely delicious…

· Two men got fined for going into the sea when there was a red flag. Also, when I was at one particular beach, where there was a red flag the lifeguards used a megaphone to tell the beach that there was a “BANDERA ROJA, PROHIBIDAR BAŇO!”

· PIPAS! They are sunflower seeds, but with the shells still on. Everywhere you go you see where people have been eating pipas, because there will be a scattering of them on the ground, as it’s totally okay to just spit out the shells. In some upmarket bars they are banned. Crazzzaayy, eh?

· The way they drink cider is very strange. If one orders a SIDRA in a bar, you will get a litre bottle. Either the bar man will come pour it for you or (if you’re brave enough not to be laughed at) you can try yourself. You see, this cider isn’t carbonated, and so to get air into it and to make it bubbly, one pours it from a height. So outside every bar you will see people with a bottle of cider of their head, pouring it into their glass they hold below the waist. It splashes everywhere, and you only get half of it in the glass, but it’s so cheap that it really doesn’t matter.

If the barman is pouring it for you, he’ll come over every once in a while and pour a small amount. This is how you are meant to drink it, in a GULPO, all at once. This means it doesn’t have the chance to go flat.

What a strange place, hmm.

MAMMA MIA here i go again…

After seeing Mamma Mia, I can’t NOT put up some ABBA.

In typical Saoirse style, I will not say much here, and just shove a load of videos in. But see the way by telling you that is padding it out a bit? And the way that pointing out the padding-out effects also added a bit of flesh to the post? So really, by now the post isn’t all that bare, or all that typical of my laziness when it comes to actually WRITING in the blog. So y’all can ignore the start of this paraghraph. Or maybe not, because if you do, then the rest of it will make no sense. So just read it, I guess. Well I suppose even if I had decided to order you to ignore the start of the paragraph, it would be too late, because you would have already read it. Unless you read from the bottom up, like in Japanese. But that would make NO sense, at all at all!

Let me know if you know of anyone who reads bottom up, or back to from, or upside down, or right to left, or diagonally, or under water. And then you can ENJOY THESE VID EE OHHHS !

Well, haven’t blogged in forever!

So, basically, I need to talk about all the stuff that’s been going on.. Firstly, and most importantly I did a work placement in JOHN ROCHA! It was brill, I got to cut out patterns, and sort through all the lovely fabric, and sew beads onto stuff in the shape of insects and lizards and stuff.

Also, they gave me a ticket to the NCAD fashion show, which John’s daughter Simone was taking part in. I took pictures, which I’ll put up ina nother post, because I hate really looonnnnggg blogs.

Hmm, what else happened? Well, a boy called James added me on bebo, and we’ve been commenting, and he seems SUPAH-FLY! He’s into fashion, and got work experience with… VIVIENNE effing WESTWOOD and JASPER bloody CONRAN! Like, ohmagod! Anywhoo, I think a friendship will blossom, as he wants to go to St Martins and I want to go to St Martins, and we’re basically the same person. (that might be a SLIGHT exaggeration..)

Also, I shaved the sides of my head. WOOT! I’m digging it majorrllyy.

I’m off to PARIS on the 30th of June, for 10 days. So, new clothesss will be a-coming, I hope..!

I’m pretty sure that’s all I gots to say, so goodbyee!

Day1.

First of August.

We left at noon with the house sparkling clean for the visitors using our house in our absence. Caught our Ryanair flight to Pisa. When we arrived it was 10.30 Irish time and 11.30 Italian time. We got a taxi to the Royal Victoria Hotel, which was disappointing because the façade was being done up and was covered in scaffolding. The interior was amazing, though. I was so wired that I couldn’t even think of sleeping. This wasn’t helpedby the fact that the river bank was crowded with hoards and hoards of people sitting on the wall, just hanging out! So I hopped into my high waisted hot pants and a vest. Walking down to the bars with my step dad was like being on a stage. The combination of high waisted shorts and my pale pale skin caused people to stare, a lot. I bought lots of water and gulped it down. Damn, it was hot! After staring at bats flying over the river, I went back up to my room and got ready for bed, and realised I had already gotten a heat rash. Lying in my bed, I saw that my ceiling was amazing! All painted and old and.. beautiful.

Day 2

Quickly did the necessary touristy things such as the leaning tower. Wasn’t that leaning, really! Got the train to Genoa. Lovely and air conditioned! We arrived at the apartment. It was decorated like a manor house, which I found strange for an Italian 3 bed apartment! Went for a walk to check out shops and stuff. I decided that I hated the place, because I couldn’t see any shops that sold anything of interest to me. Carlo, the person who’s apartment we were staying in made a delicious risotto and fish dish. yum yum! After dinner mummy and I went out for a walk. Everything was cold. I felt very sad as it wasn’twhat I had expected at all- it was a ghost town!p1060509.jpg

Day3

Got funny but yummy croissants for breakfast filled with apricot jammy stuff. Went for another walk and found H&M and Zara to my delight!

Day4

We went to the port area, which had a great playground! Then we wandered around tiny narrow streets in the medieval quarter to find a restaurant. After a while we came across a piazza with loads of bars and restaurants all packed in. Sat outside and sampled my first taste of Genovese pesto- so creamy!p1060546.jpg

Day 5

We decided to go to the beach, so we caught a bus out of the city. It took about 20 mins until we were at the end of the line, after passing loads and loads and loads of beaches, all tiny and packed with people! We asked which beach was public, but found out that the public beach was just rocks. Not suitable for the younger siblings, oi! So we just went into the private beach, desperate at this point, while mum went for a walk. I think it was about a fiver to get in, another sum of money for a changing booth, more again for a locker.. oh oh oh! We sat down on the sunbeds, after realising we had left the towels with mummy! Then we got in trouble cos we hadn’t paid for the chair. Oh my goodness! The sea was ridiculously salty and the Italians were ridiculously skinny and beautiful- I felt fat and pale and ugly!

Had a delicious pizza for din dins!p1060614.JPG

Day 6.

We decided to catch a special train to a little town in the mountains called Cassella, which apparently had a swimming pool. The train was supakuul, all graffiti’d. And very narrow, so that it could climb steep mountains! On the train we got talking to a man who told us that the only train bringing us back to Genova that day was go to leave an hours after we got there! Bummer or what??!?! The town was vair quaint, little bra shops and a lovely bar/gelatería, where I had the best ice cream of the whole trip: lemon and pistachio .. oh YES! We passed the pool, but then had to hop straight back on the train. Then went to sleep in the apartamento!p1060637.JPGp1060635.JPG

Day 7.

Went to another private beach, but this one had a pool with it! It was a nice relaxing day, but nothing too exciting happened!p1060689.JPG

Day 8.

Mother and I took a DOUBLE DECKER train to Nervi,.where there was this amazering promenade clinging to a cliff face, dotted with cafés and little shops. One café was actually on a rock out in the waves that was connected to the mainland by a bridge. It was closed, because the waves were crazy and splashing all into it, but it was still cool to see. There were also private “beaches”, which were just bits of rocks with changing rooms beside them, umbrellas, chairs and changing rooms, ETC!p1060716.JPG

Day 9.

Got the train to Bonassola, a seaside town where we were going to be staying, but didn’t in the end up! It was nice, but kinda touristy. Met the nicest girl on the train!

Day 10.

The cleaner came to the apartment, so we al rushed out of the house and got a train to Spotorno. We went to the public part of the beach. Nice not to pay for beach!

Day 11.

Went to Zara in the morning and bought shorts and a striped dress..

piccies coming! of clothes! yipee!

I’m back from Italy.

Well, I’ve been back for quite a while really. Got back on the 15th. Eek. Lack of posts. You (as in Grace) must be on the verge of death. How could you survive without me? (heavvy heavy sarcasm.)

Anywhoo, I’ve been trying to gather and arrange and make sense of my trip. Blog coming soon with photos and memories all in diary format.

Might as well update that I’m going to Dublin on Saturday, and hope to get some flat black ankle boots for school. Also jodhpurs. Why don’t we have Gap here? I’d love the jodhpurs featured in British Vogue. Can’t find any pictures, but basically just… jodhpurs.

I have been away.

Far, far away in a wonderous place called Lahinch!

Every year I go to Lahinch to stay with friends and surf. While we usually go to the surf school, this year we decided that we had learn all we could from it, and decided to just surf with her dad’s board. Alas, the waves were pretty nonexistent, so we only went out twice. Once, on a messy icky day, and once on a glorious, glassy day! I was using the dad’s boards, mostly his 8′6″, but my favourite was his 10′00″. Wowow, it was amegamazing. I don’t want to boast, but.. oh well YES I DO! I was walking the board, on my first day on a longboard. So that’s it! From wanting to to buy a short 6′7″, I have been converted to having my heart set on a 9′00″. Woohoo!

On my way back home, I stopped in Galway to stay with Laura (click here for her music..!). She brought me to a gig in a bookshop called Bell Book and Candle, where I fell in love with three bands I had never heard of before. What is it about live music that makes it so amazing? They were: The Terribles (not at all Terrible!), So Cow (put on quite a show, geez was he sweating!) and Slo Mo Fireworks (they use the drum beats on one of those mini Casio keyboards, that every had when they were a kid!)

The next day I stumbled into Topshop, not expecting to find anything within my price range. But there, right in front of me, was a pile so big of clothes, all twinkling at me to touch, right under a big BUY ONE GET ONE FREE sign. *faints*. Yes, I was excited. I rifled through desperately, and what did I find, but a pair of high waisted shorts! I had previously classed them as faddy and that only trendsters would wear them, but they looked so good (helped muchly by the €15 price tag!) So I decided to try them on. I searched for my get one free.. and what did I find, but a really great woolen skirt that will last me all A/W! I tried them on, and… love!

I also bought a ruffly top for €3 in Penneys, which I love!

Have I told y’all about my fanzine?

Not properly, no.

I’m not in the mood to, yet.

Harry Potter is out today ^.^

Anywhoo… While in town on Tuesday we saw these cool people. I said I wanted to ask them for a picture for the zine. Grace was all “do it do it do it!”, but I was like.. “nahh ima shy-a” Then Megan shouted “EXCUSE ME! Can she take a photo of you for her magazine?”

And I did. When I asked if they played instruments they said no. I felt silly. I asked if they were in a band, but turns out they were buskers “earning a bit of moneys”(Not very smart ones-we saw hem ambling towards the suburbs to busk!)

I asked if they wanted to say anything, and they replied with blank faces, saying there was “nothing” in their heads.

Anyway, they are the cool!

I got my hair cut. I like it! Two people have commented that it looks like Hayley from Hard Candy’s hair. She is so wonderfully great. I want to be Ellen Page!
